Pancake onions were used predominately on ships and had to be flat and heavy to withstand the rocking. These late 17th to early 18th century vessels were crudely made and are recovered from shipwrecks, although some are found buried around coastal areas.
The pancake onions in Cosbert collection were recovered during the 1970s from the Essequibo river around Fort Island where the Dutch and English fought during the second Dutch War in 1665.
Apart from the Cosbert collection of intact pancake onions, similar examples can be found at Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
