I will be the first to admit that when it comes to dating black glass bottles then the academic researcher rules supreme.
What is the most appropriate yardstick to date antique black glass
bottles? Maybe it's the:
- applied seal (dated or un-dated)
- position, style and nature of the string rim
- lip structure
- body dimensions and weight
- neck length and formation and/or
- base pontil.
An applied seal on a black glass bottle, like the presence of a Ming dynasty stamp on Chinese ceramics, does not guarantee that the piece was made in that era. The Ming mark has been applied on 20th century pieces as a mark of respect to the Ming dynasty styles.
Don't get me wrong, black glass with early applied seals are great collectors pieces. I have first hand experience selling these beauties for in excess of £6,000. However, when it comes to dating black glass this has to be done in conjuction with all the other factors outlined above.
I will outline the mission of the Rare Bottle Seekers Network - rbsnw - in conjunction with my bottles website http://www.cosbert.com/bottles.html .
The mission thing is: To provide an extensive online internet resource that will assist in the advancement of knowledge in the field of antique black glass bottles.
The vehicle to get there thing is: A dedicated server with 500+ megabytes of webspace to ensure that black glass images are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to collectors and researchers.
The benefits to rbsnw members thing is: If you have a major glass collection, research papers, images for auctions etc. then 5-10 megabytes of webspace is yours for the asking.
The way forward: I have listed on ebay a cross-section of black glass bottles from 1680-1740 for you to review. Please take a moment to review the string rims, lips, bodies, necks and pontil on items and feel free to use review my collection of black glass bottles on www.cosbert.com/bottles.html.
