Antique wine bottle - English Onion c.1685

Excavated English Onion Wine Bottle circa. 1685

Origin: England

Colour: Green tint

Dimensions: Height 5.50 in Width 5.00in Base 4.00

Lip: Early English applied string rim

Base: Kickup with disc pontil

Source: England.

Condition: Great. Excavated condition with rim chips and extensive surface decay: pitting, devitrification and peeling due to burial.

Special features: This is a rare example of the transition shape between the mid- to late-17th century shaft and globe and the early 18th century English onion wine bottle.

Notice the pronounced pontil scar that was present on most English shaft and globe bottles between c.1650-1690 and then virtually disappeared. English onion and mallet bottles between c.1690 to c.1740 carried predominately sand pontil scars. However, rough disc pontil scars were revived on English bottles from the mid-18th to early 19th centuries.
