The Cosbert Collection comprised mainly of
black glass bottles and jugs dating from 1690-1850 that were recovered during
the 1970s from around Fort Island in the Essequibo region of Guyana.
Fort Island has had a chequered history of European occupation during the 17th and 18th centuries until Guyana was officially handed over to the English in the 19th century.
In 1498 and 1499, early European explorers Christopher Columbus and Alonso de Ojeda sailed along the coast of Guyana.
The El Dorado myth brought European adventures in droves to Guyana during the 16th century. Spaniard Pedro da Silva arrived in Guyana in 1593 and attempted to settle in the Orinoco region with 2000 men. da Silva’s main preoccupation was with the fabled Amerindian city of gold – El Dorado. Less than 50 of Pedro’s men survived the expedition. In 1616, Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh directed his attentions to exploring the uncharted lands of Guyana supported by his son. Unfortunately, Raleigh’s son was killed while attacking a Spanish settlement. In 1616, Dutch colonists were also setting up their stronghold at Kijk-over-al – Overlooking All - close to the mouth of the Essequibo river. The Dutch colonists’ main priority was agriculture rather than El Dorado.
Bottles in The Cosbert Collection were either
recovered by divers dredging the banks of Fort Island in the Essequibo region
or bought from residents on the island.
These bottles are labelled and numbered 1-151 and include onions,
mallets, cylinders, case gins and utility bottles. Bottle number 151 is actually a 17th century
Bellarmine jug. The Cosbert Collection
also included several excavated and cellar-found bottles acquired from around the
UK and the USA.
The disposal of the Cosbert Collection started during January 2001 and by 30th June 2001 approximately 100 antique black glass bottles were disposed of by auction on ebay.com.
Internet auction prices for early black glass bottles have shown a steady trend during the period January 2000 to June 2001. Internet auctions have realised between $x.00-$x.00 for early shaft-and-globe bottles. Sealed Wine Bottles with dated and undated seals have realised between $x.00-$x.00. Ebay.com remains the leading e-commerce market place for black glass bottles.
Live UK auction results were mixed for the first half-year of 2001. In March 2001, Sotheby’s London realised £x for a sealed English Wine Bottle circa. 1715. While in June 2001, two English Wine Bottles with dated seals for 1706 and 1716 realised £x and £x, respectively. A year earlier in 2000, a record £x was paid at a live UK auction for the TEB sealed shaft and globe bottle. This bottle is illustrated in Ward Lloyd’s A Wine Lover’s Glasses - The AC Hubbard Collection, 2001.
The main factors affecting the final auction price in a live or internet-based black glass auction are rarity, desirability, condition, demand and supply perceptions and bidder apathy. The success of internet auctions depend on managing the closing times to accommodate international bidders from North America, Europe and the Far East.
If you are using this booklet to value of your own portfolio of antique glass bottles then it is important to use an average price of similar pieces rather than using the highest prices realised.

Attributing English antique glass bottles to this transition period 1715-1730 is somewhat of a nightmare, since not all commercial glasshouses adopted consistent bottle blowing techniques. Further, the movement of Huguenot craftsmen – silversmiths, glassblowers, furniture makers and other craftsmen – produced a fusion of European styles in vessels, furniture and jewellery during this period.
Old Masters’ paintings provide evidence that linear bottle evolution from the shaft-and-globe to the cylinder is a flawed theory since most shapes co-existed during the 17th and 18th centuries until circa. 1735. Bottles recovered from 17th and 18th century shipwrecks also highlight the need for a more scientific approach to the dating of antique wine bottles pre 1935. Thanks to Olive R Jones’ research entitled Cylindrical English Wine & Beer Bottles 1735-1850, one can safely attribute age to bottles produced from 1735 onwards.
Survival of an 18th century
commercial glasshouse depended on the same economics as today. Positive distinction of wares was necessary
to achieve a competitive edge. Styles
were dictated by status in society, domestic and international market
considerations. Further, vessels for
use on ships required different design considerations.
It is not unusual to find bottles that once belonged to the rich and famous – the main patrons of the artist and craftsman – sporting 17th century shaft-and-globe neck configurations on 18th century bodies. Some even had dated seals – see Plate 45.
One anecdotal theory is that crude English bottles circa. 1700-1735 found in the West Indies and South America were blown in local glasshouses. There is no historical evidence that glasshouses existed in Guyana, Suriname or Brazil during this period – only sugar and tobacco plantations. Further, this theory is knocked on the head when one considers that the USA made several unsuccessful attempts at commercial glassblowing in affluent Jamestown during this same period.

The sealed bottles illustrated below were sold at traditional antique auctions in the United Kingdom. These sealed bottles were never part of the Cosbert black glass collection and are only included here for comparative purposes.
Sealed bottles are rarely auctioned on the internet. However, when these bottles are auctioned on ebay.com they frequently perform much better that at live auctions.
